We’re seven weeks into the year but with so much happening the political space, and to some extent in the music scene, it feels like we’re months into the new year. There have been some surprising shifts in the music industry that you should you.

Nasty C has signed a deal with Universal Music Group. The Mabala Noise signee is said to have signed an international deal with the African subsidiary of the record label major. A lot has been said about Mabala’s ability to effectively manage and nurture the talent that is Nasty, usually falling short of the understandably high expectations set for his career trajectory. It should be interesting to see how Nasty C’s career develops under a major label with the resource and machinery to create a mega star out of his talent.

Lady Zamar’s debut album King Zamar has gone gold. The house music songstress broke the news on social media. Driven by her hit singles Love Is Blind and Baby, the twelve track album is filled with beautiful sing-along house tunes. The Universal signee is also a sought after feature vocalist having worked with Prince Kaybee on his smash-hit Charlotte. She recently dropped the visual for her latest single Collide.

Indie label Mabala Noise, owned by African National Congress politician Reggie Nkabinde, has reportedly shut down. News of the liquidation of the label broke this weekend after Reggie announced his bid to run for ANC Youth League Presidency. The label, once a home to Riky Rick, Nasty C, Major League DJs, and Gigi Lamayne amongst a host of other artists, has reportedly vacated its offices in Fourways.
